Supporting the Cooks River to Iron Cove GreenWay

Families invited to debate

May 1st, 2012 at 21:31

The Friends of the GreenWay group has urged the inner west community, especially families with school-aged children, along to the May 31 NSW Parliament GreenWay debate.

The 4.30pm debate kick-off time means that parents would be able to bring their children after school (most schools finish around 3pm). However, as the debate will last no longer than 16 minutes, attendees are strongly urged to arrive by at least 4.15pm.

Read our media release and flyer for more details about the debate. It would be helpful if you are going to come along to register with Jennifer Kent (details in the flyer) to help us plan for the day.

The GreenWay will be a major off-road route for local kids to get to school and a place where they can get fit while safely exploring the fascinating local environment. For more details, read our

As an active cyclist, I’m sorry about your loss… But a couple of the comments in this story here have nailed it:

Politically, you were outplayed. The Government very pointedly used the timing of the debate to announce the Light Rail tender go-ahead and that the GreenWay was dead in the water. It was a calculated slap in the face to Jamie Parker, Rochelle Porteous and the Labor people in this photo – all of whom the Coalition hold in contempt.

They were NEVER going to give a “win” to their bitter opponents. Apart from these MPs, most of the Councils here spend a great deal of time attacking the State government of all issues. Especially Leichhardt, which surely must destined for amalgamation of the chop before the Coalition lose power (in about 20 years!)

And that’s the point of the politics here, the GreenWay supporters should have known that and played their hand a bit smarter. As it stands, cyclists have lost this battle.

Next time… use the tactics the Weston St Nimbys did… Appeal to self interest and greed, Works every time. Just ask Jamie Parker, the inner west’s Nimby Commander-in-chief.

Also, I don’t understand why the Councils are crying poor. Especially Leichhardt, which represents some of the richest property owners in Sydney. They certainly have lots of spare funds for Nimby campaigns, like the Rozelle Leagues Club one they are paying for at the moment.

But not a cent for the GreenWay? Why not?
